FAQ

Do I have to purchase a bunch of expensive equipment?

The short answer is, no. The majority of exercises can be performegoscue-equipmented with items you most likely have at home. Usually a pillow, yoga strap, chair, wall and the floor will suffice. However, clients who have the most success usually purchase a few pieces of equipment that come in a package.

The one piece of equipment the vast majority of clients will need to purchase is the Egoscue® Multi-Positioning Tower. It is hard to properly makeshift it at home. It is well worth the investment. Your therapist will let you know what equipment you will need.

Exercises?? I don’t know about that! I haven’t exercised in ages!

Good news, the exercises are not the typical exercises that one is accustomed to seeing in the gym.  Think of these as gentle corrective exercisscreen-shot-2015-06-23-at-4-41-28-pmes and stretches that are tailored to you in order to bring back balance and proper range of motion to your body.  Some of the exercises are passive – you get to hang out and relax for a bit.  Other exercises are more active – the active ones range from very easy to moderately challenging, but they are always based on a one’s own abilities.

What if one of the exercises is painful?

Regarding pain, we need you to differentiate between pain and soreness.  They are not one and the same.  Muscles can become sore as you start to “wake them up”, but this should to diminish over time as your muscles adapt and adjust to the menu.

If you are experiencing pain, put the exercise on hold and be sure to let your therapist know so any necessary menu adjustments can be made. This is not, “no pain, no gain” or “grit your teeth and bare it”.  Listen to your body.

What if one of the exercises is painful?

Each client responds differently, but you should feel different after your first appointment.  As you continue the therapy process your body will continue to change and your awareness of your body will continue to grow, day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month. We have been doing our exercises for years and our bodies still continue to change for the positive.

I want to get out of pain and fast!

Although some people do experience pretty immediate relief, to make the results long lasting is just going to take time. Remember that your body most likely didn’t get into it’s current position overnight, and so it’s going to take some time to get out of it as well. The great thing is that it won’t take as long as it took you to get that way.  The body has an intense desire to heal itself and so you should start to see results fairly quickly.

What if one of the exercises is painful?

We ask that you do your your menu daily. Although some clients in the beginning will need to do their menu more than once per day. Remember, you do your menu daily to keep your body feeling good, just like you brush your teeth daily to keep them healthy.

Do I have to do my menu in its entirety?

Yes, we suggest you do your whole menu once per day (ideally in the morning) and in the given order. The sequence is important as the e-cises build on one another. The rest of the day feel free to do any e-cise(s) that you feel is/are beneficial and help keep your body feeling good.

Why do I need multiple visits and how many visits will I need?

Misalignment happens over time (decades even) and so it takes time to correct. Most clients will use between eight and sixteen visits to get out of pain and back to the activities they love. Even if your pain goes away after the first visit it is important to continue the therapy process as we are going after what caused the pain, not the pain itself, so it doesn’t come back. After they are pain free the clients who do the best long-term come in for maintenance visits at least twice a year (like one would go to the dentist).

Do I have to keep doing my menus for forever?

Only if your goal is staying pain free and living the active life you want to lead! If you stop supplying your body with the positive stimulus of the e-cises and go back to the regular routine you were leading before therapy then your body will eventually go back to it’s misaligned aways. Remember your body responds to the stimulus you give it, be it positive or negative. Doing Posture Therapy is really a lifestyle change, not a quick fix or bandaid.

Can I continue with my current activities?

In general most activities and movements are positive stimulus when your body is correctly aligned. It is extremely important to listen to your body. If the activity feels good during and after and you enjoy it, keep it up. If your symptoms increase during or after then it may be necessary to put the activity on hold until the body returns to a more neutral position. We believe it is important to “straighten before you strengthen.”

How much does the therapy cost?

How satisfied are you with what’s happened with your health care over the last 20 years. Do you like your access to your doctor? Do you like how much time he spends with you and how much he educates you?

Would you like your first visit with us to be 90-120 minutes, or 9-12 minutes? Do you want us to really listen to you, partner with you, and form a plan of action, and then be available by phone or email between appointments, or would you like to speak to an assistant for 10 minutes and that’s your appointment? Because that’s what insurance would do to our therapy.

Does insurance cover Posture Therapy?

Being non-medical, Posture Therapy is not directly covered by insurance. That being said, some clients have had success using their Health Savings Account or Flex Spending Account for therapy. Your therapist can’t file anything directly with your insurance provider, but they will help you if they can by providing an invoice, letter of explanation, posture photos, etc. that you can send to your provider.

I have (insert health concern), is this Posture Therapy right for me?

Is Posture Therapy different from yoga, Pilates or other such classes?

Yes. While yoga and Pilates can be beneficial in their own right, the majority their classes are group-based while posture therapy is personalized to each unique client. In group based yoga and pilates some of the exercises might be easy for one person, while impossible for the next. Posture Therapy uses a series of corrective exercises custom tailored to your body. The exercises are done in order to eliminate pain by removing your structural dysfunctions. Unlike in a class setting, you will work together with your therapist to develop each of your e-cise menus that will be personalized based on your needs and abilities each visit.
